Planning a visit to the Douro Valley? Four great places for you to stay…

“The Douro valley is located in the northeast of Portugal. It is famous for being the homeland of the Port Wine and it was also the world’s first wine region to have a formal demarcation, when in 1756 the royal Portuguese charter decided to protect the production and trade of this valuable product.” Oscar Quevedo

There are treasures to be found on the walls…

On each corner of the road…

In a cozy room with a friend and a few decanters filled with some of the best Port wines…

And in the barrels and casks of the cellars of the region…

The Douro Valley has fascinated me for years. The amazing scenery, the delicious food, the outstanding wines… There are very places on the planet that are so special and unique. It is a true paradise for the #winelover.

If you are planning to visit the Douro, these are four places that I recommend for you to stay:

Since 2005 Quinta do Vallado has a confortable Wine Hotel, with 13 rooms:

5 in the old Mannor House, built in 1733, and recently refurbished;

8 in a new builging, concluded in 2012 , an built after a project by Arq. Francisco Vieira de Campos . In this new project the slate ( predominant in the soil of the region ) was the main material used

Facilities – Air conditioning, Wi fi, satellite tv, iPAD, main meals ( with advance booking), light meals in the swimming pool, billiard room, massage.

Morgadio da Calçada offers 8 rooms to its guests. They are located in the old stables and agricultural storage sheds, recovered by traditional methods, but in a contemporary approach. Contrasting with the seventeenth century’s old Manor, these rooms present every comfort the most demanding client would expect to find: air conditioning, television, sophisticated bathrooms and the best Portuguese materials.

In spite of their modernity, they still keep the charm of ancient rural buildings. They are spread through several patios which provide privacy for each guest.

The visitors also have at their disposal the recovered old kitchen, which was once used by the farm workers, set with fireplace and coverlets for the winter and completely opened out to the patios in the summer, offering overwhelming views of the vines that are used for the production of Morgadio da Calçada’s wines and making them completely forget about life in the city.

In a 51 hectares plain estate, full of  vineyards stretching down to the banks of the Douro river, The Wine House Hotel Quinta da Pacheca as such an intense soul that surprises visitors for its history, combined with innovative and sophisticated style. The main building is a typical house of the eighteenth century that was completely restored respecting its traditional architecture and original values. The common areas and its unique fifteen bedrooms now benefit from a modern, avant-garde image, with a sober and elegant style. This charming boutique hotel is entirely devoted to gastronomy and wine tourism, where welfare and comfort are omnipresent values and the vineyard and wine play a crucial role.
