#winelover… what is it?

Since we started our #winelover’s group on Facebook on Valentine’s Day this year, many people have asked us this question: “What is this #winelover thing?”

We have been trying to answer this question the best that we can, but the truth is… “the thing (it)” is developing in way that we never envisioned… “It” has become something unique at a staggering speed! So we think it’s about time to ask you – someone who feels as a member of this community – if you like what we think “#winelover” should be.

This is our Mission Statement:

#winelover is a strong, connected, and dynamic community that expresses itself through the use of social media. The community exists to promote cooperation and enjoyment among people who love wine. Periodic hangouts throughout the world are organized for the community to have the opportunity to get together in ‘real life’.

This is the direction we’re headed. We would love to hear your feedback.

Thank you,
LA

After a few months after I posted “#winelover… what is it?”, I believe that our new MS should be something like this: “#winelover is a strong, connected, and dynamic community that expresses itself through the use of social media. The community exists to promote cooperation and enjoyment among people who love wine. Periodic hangouts throughout the world are organized for the community to have the opportunity to get together in ‘real life’.”

Interesting… Is this CJ or PK making this comment? I would love to see you further develop this concept that a “hangout” is not good for our community… Cheers!

It’s not the concept – it’s the term!

Gentlemen do not associate in “hangouts”. Not in England, at least. We may meet, gather, assemble or convene, in a wide range of venues. But the idea of “hangouts” is reminiscent of a Wild West movie.

      (Or, possibly, a clothing malfunction.)

Couldn’t the community organise “meetings” or “events” instead?

I see the point. However, my perception was that “gentlemen” wouldn’t be bothered by the hangout term if they weren’t bothered by the name of the community itself – #winelover – a word that doesn’t even exist! In other words, I believe that a true #winelover (meaning a member of our community) wouldn’t be bothered by the name of our meetings… but I will let you be the judge of that. Cheers!

My father’s parents emigrated from Bradford, England and my mother was a gentile New Englander so I’ve was raised to be a Gentleman — but I had the good fortune to grow up in the San Francisco area and live in several other states and 2 foreign countries before coming to Texas in 1973. This is my first encounter with #winelover group, and I’d be delighted to join in the fun and hangout with “Y’all”. In my limited experience and understanding when working class Brits visit the pub and encounter friends there it would be totally inappropriate to call that a meeting. They “hangout” at the pub and encounter friends and acquaintances there. Move up the status a level or two and I thing the same terms would apply to gentlemen who encounter each other frequently (or occasionally) at “the club.” The term “hangout” is recent, even trendy, and implies something very informal. The term “meeting” implies formality and structure {and possibly requires Robert’s Rules]. Just thought I’d off my 2 cents, which may not even be worth that.
